The Local Church
The Lord Brought Me to the Local Church
I entered The University of Texas at Austin my sophomore year as a transfer student from the University of Houston. I came with the intent to continue my psychology degree, but even more to find some Christians on the campus that I could meet with on a consistent basis. As I was entering my second year in college I began to realize how much I needed the Lord in my life. For the first time I was living a long distance from my family and many close friends, and I barely knew anyone at the school to which I had just transferred. Even after meeting many new faces in classes and attending several different social functions on campus I still felt an emptiness deep within me. There was a longing within me that was not being satisfied by all of those things. This drew me to pray to the Lord desperately that He would bring me to find some genuine believers in the Lord that I could fellowship with and have a relationship with.
The Lord answered my prayer immediately. I began to meet many students with whom I could pray, read the Bible and have fellowship with concerning the Lord. This resulted mainly through a group called Christians on Campus that I had met at the beginning of the year.
I not only wanted fellowship on campus with Christians but also needed a place where I could meet locally for weekly fellowship with believers. Eventually, some of the students I had met at the beginning of the year with Christians on Campus brought me to the local church in Austin. Beforehand, I had visited several different meeting places, some on campus, others off the campus, all varying in denomination.
After a few meetings with the local church in Austin, I felt at home. I had never experienced such genuine care and concern from a group of Christians as I did with the students and families meeting there. In addition to this, what attracted me the most to those meetings with the church in Austin was their love for the Lord. It was the genuine, strong and undying love of these believers for the Lord that kept me coming week after week to the meetings. I realized they had something that I didn't have, and I wanted it.
Now, after having met with the local church in Austin for a period of over three and half years, I can honestly say that my love for the Lord is growing deeper, stronger and greater with each new day. My relationship with the Lord and personal growth in the Lord would not be where it is today if it weren't for the genuine love and care and the strong and consistent display of Christ among the students and families within the local church.
